Earth Hour

Google uk has turned it’s lights out today. When you go on the main search page it’s black. This is to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth hour.

As a matter of fact it is all in the name of a place for us to live: a cleaner and better Earth. Besides a better energy use we can very easy do much more in our effort to improve the health of ‘our’ planet. There is off course the matter of… waste…

Some facts

  1. Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down. Almost all the plastics ever made can still be found somewhere.
  2. In the UK, around 60% of household waste comes from packaging.
  3. About 96% of dead fulmars in Orkney/Scotland were found to have an average of 28 pieces of dumped plastic waste in their stomachs.

Who invented plastic?

The very first plastic was unveiled by Alexander Parkes (1813 – 1890) at the 1862 Great International Exhibition in London, which he introduced as Parkesine. This substance was an organic material derived from cellulose that could be molded after heating, but retained its shape when it cooled.

  1. Hi Caroline, Google US is blacked out too. I’ve been hearing on our news station that we need to recycle our plastics and aluminium foil too. They’re giving us a web site to go to. http://www.greenfeet.com/ where we can learn how to purchase recycled foil. They also recommend we go without it. I remember those days not using it. We had little pastic reusable caps to put over bowls of leftover food. Hmmm. It’s worth a try.

    Hugs!!

  2. I am not sure if Google AU was blacked out but I am assuming it was.
I did keep our lights off here for Earth Hour.

    ((((Hugs)))
